IT / Cybersecurity Intern
About the Role
Capital Cyber helps small and mid-size businesses harden their cybersecurity posture, with a focus on CMMC compliance for defense-industrial-base clients. This internship sits at the intersection of hands-on IT support and the early career steps of a cybersecurity practitioner.
You will learn by doing real work for real clients, with structured training and access to professional tools alongside. This is a builder's role. You will be trusted to own projects end to end, communicate directly with clients, and keep your work visible to the team.
What You Will Do
- Apply Windows updates and patches across client environments on a regular cadence.
- Provide remote IT support: triage tickets, resolve common Windows and Microsoft 365 issues, escalate cleanly when needed.
- Travel to client sites in Northern Virginia for onsite hands-on support (driving your own vehicle, mileage paid).
- Complete assigned projects on time and communicate status proactively, before being asked.
- Keep the ticketing system fully up to date, every ticket, every time.
- Communicate with clients directly when the work calls for it: emails, calls, occasional meetings.
- Produce a monthly written report summarizing what shipped, what is open, and what is at risk.
- Work alongside the cybersecurity team and progressively take on security tasks (vulnerability scans, security awareness program support, CMMC documentation help) as you grow into them.
What You Need
- US citizenship — required for client work on government-adjacent engagements.
- A valid driver's license and a reliable personal vehicle.
- Self-starter mindset: you do not need to be chased to finish things.
- Strong written and spoken communication. Clients will read your tickets and emails. Clarity matters.
- Familiarity with Windows administration at a user-support level (settings, accounts, basic troubleshooting, software install).
- Comfort with picking up new tools quickly. We use a modern stack and the learning curve is part of the job.
- Genuine curiosity about cybersecurity. You do not need certifications yet, but you should want them.
What We Provide
- Cybersecurity training: structured ramp on CMMC basics, common controls, and the tools we use day to day.
- Access to professional tools — ticketing, RMM, vulnerability scanning, security awareness platforms — under our licensing.
- Mentorship from working practitioners. You will have a named lead and weekly check-ins.
- Paid hours. Mileage reimbursed for all onsite client visits.
- Career path. Strong performers move into a part-time or full-time role after the internship.
