Health Clinics

Someone Who Owns Security at the Clinic, So the Medical Director Does Not Have To.

Somebody has to decide what the clinic's security program should be, keep track of every vendor that touches patient data and tell the owners where the risk is. A virtual CISO does that part time, with our team behind them.

For clinic owners and practice administrators who carry security decisions on top of running the practice.

Virtual CISO (vCISO) for Health Clinics

Who Owns HIPAA Security at a Small Clinic?

Often the practice administrator, by default, alongside everything else. A virtual CISO takes on the security leadership: they learn the clinic's goals, build a technology roadmap, develop the cybersecurity policy and procedures under it, and oversee the program so it keeps running.

Where Does the Risk Analysis Fit?

At the start. The Security Rule requires an accurate and thorough assessment of the risks to the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the clinic's ePHI (45 CFR 164.308(a)(1)(ii)(A)), and risk management that follows from it. The formal risk analysis and its documentation are delivered by our Compliance Division, Capital Cyber Compliance. The vCISO turns what it finds into a roadmap, in order, and checks that the work gets done.

How Do You Keep Track of Vendors That Touch Patient Data?

A clinic's EHR, billing service, patient portal, e-prescribing, telehealth and IT provider may all create, receive, maintain or transmit ePHI. The Security Rule asks for satisfactory assurances from each business associate, documented in a written contract or other arrangement (164.308(b) and 164.314(a)). The vCISO keeps that list current and answers the security questionnaires that come the other way, from health systems, payers and insurers.

Is the HIPAA Security Rule About to Change?

Possibly. HHS published a proposed rule to strengthen the Security Rule in the Federal Register on 2025-01-06. As of 2026-11-05 it is a proposal, not a final rule, and the text in force on eCFR was last amended in 2013. A vCISO tracks where it stands and what it would mean for your roadmap; confirm the status with your counsel before relying on it.

What Does Leadership Get From a vCISO?

A straight answer on risk, in plain language, and a written incident response plan tested so people know their part. With us, the vCISO and the team running your IT are the same company, so the plan and the systems do not drift apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

4 QUESTIONS
Does a vCISO do our HIPAA risk analysis?

The formal risk analysis and its documentation are delivered by our Compliance Division, Capital Cyber Compliance. The vCISO works from its findings to set priorities and oversee the program.

Do we need business associate agreements with our vendors?

If a vendor creates, receives, maintains or transmits ePHI on the clinic's behalf, the Security Rule requires satisfactory assurances documented in a written contract or other arrangement (45 CFR 164.308(b) and 164.314(a)). Confirm the specifics with your counsel.

Is the proposed HIPAA Security Rule final?

Not as of 2026-11-05. HHS published it as a proposed rule on 2025-01-06, and the Security Rule text in force on eCFR was last amended in 2013. Confirm the current status with your counsel.

It is scoped to what you need, from a regular cadence of meetings to deeper involvement during an audit or an incident. We set it on the call.
